The Association for Latin Teaching

ARLT is a constituent member of JACT. Anyone who is a member of JACT is automatically a member of ARLT.

However, you do not need to be a member of either to attend Summer Schools or Refresher Days. The Association was founded, as the Association for the Reform of Latin Teaching, in 1911, to promote by discussion, co-operation and experiment the teaching of Classics in all types of schools. It has not confined itself to the study of any particular method, nor exclusively to Latin. From the beginning it has concerned itself with all aspects of Classics teaching in schools.

Every year we run two INSET events for teachers: a Refresher Day and a Summer School. The Summer School takes place in a school, college or university chosen for its attractive setting, often somewhere of classical interest. There is a varied programme, from which members choose options to suit their needs and interests. Typically the programme includes reading groups and other opportunities to read Latin and Greek and practise pronunciation; discussion groups; prose composition; art, craft, drama, video and music; GCSE and A level material; classroom games; coursework, museum visits, trips; etc. There is a very active social life alongside the more serious work and everybody is made to feel very welcome!

The Refresher Day, run in conjunction with the Classical Association, takes place on the first Saturday in March, with a similar programme on a smaller scale. In both cases, most of the option groups are led by practising teachers who have expertise and ideas to share. This makes the courses very relevant to the practical needs of teachers in the classroom, providing valuable INSET opportunities. At both meetings there are displays of books and aural and visual aids, including the loan collection of artefacts, coins and AV material of the Association's Teaching Resource Service.

In conjunction with JACT, ARLT publishes the Journal of Classics Teaching, which appears termly and is issued as part of the membership subscription. It contains articles of interest and practical value to all teachers of Classics, as well as reviews of books and teaching materials.
