Find answers to the questions you’ve always wanted to ask…

“The Classical World and the modern world – 2,000 years on are we any different?
“How did Latin become French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian and Italian?”
“Why do our plants have Latin names?”
“What’s habeas corpus?”
“Which Greek tragedies did Shakespeare like best?”

GIFTED AND TALENTED

If you organise Gifted and Talented events, you may be interested in our Outreach Programme for Classics and History. The Classical World is a treasure trove of ideas and inspiration for students eager to expand their knowledge and understanding. Delving deeper into history, enjoying the delights of poetry, philosophy and new languages, analysing the politics behind art and getting to grips with the legacy of the ancient Mediterranean on present day Western culture - students can join in vibrant debates on these topics and feed their new knowledge and skills back into the other subjects they study. The University’s Outreach Programme for Classics and History offers talks and workshops designed to encourage G&T students to fulfil their potential by exploring new areas of knowledge and venturing beyond the confines of curricula.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY CLASSICS OUTREACH PROGRAMME EXPANDS ITS WORK IN THE PRIMARY SECTOR

- NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SUBSIDISED DRAMA WORKSHOPS for 6-10 year olds.

In March 2007 The Classics Outreach Programme at Oxford teamed up with
Temple Theatre (run by Oxford graduates Paul O'Mahony and Richard Darbourne) to trial run a series of drama workshops in 25 primary schools in Oxfordshire. The workshops were funded by Oxford University and the Classical Association, and proved an instant hit!

Oxford University Classics Faculty is now celebrating the great success
of the trial with a significant expansion in resources for its Primary Outreach Programme. If you would like your school to take advantage of what's on offer, there has never been a better time to get in touch!

Living Classics, the Education Department at Temple Theatre, is now the official partner of The Oxford Classics Outreach Programme in the delivery of Outreach services in the Primary sector. The Classical Association is also a generous sponsor of this project and we'd like to thank them for their continued support.

We have a very exciting year ahead of us, and will now be offering drama workshops to state primary schools right across the UK, (with the exception of Northern Ireland). We will be touring the country from September 2007
delivering series of workshops in different counties to classes of
students in Years 3-5. These workshops are an interactive, entertaining and vibrant step back in time to the ancient world of classical mythology. Don't miss out, book your workshop now!

WORKSHOP OUTLINE:
Two classically trained actors and Oxford graduates take pupils back through time to 430BC and introduce the world of ancient Athens. After a brief tour of the city of Athens, Pericles and Themistocles engage pupils in their favourite pastime - storytelling! With the full participation of the
whole class we recreate stories such as Theseus and the Minotaur, and
historical events such as the Battle of Salamis, exploring the life and times of Ancient Greece through the exciting, accessible and visual medium of theatre.
Roman drama workshops also available following a similar outline.

Suitable for Years 3-5

We hope that as many schools as possible will take advantage of this
opportunity and get in touch with the Classics Outreach Officer Elizabeth
Belcher at the Classics Faculty in Oxford:
