Free Books Offered

Reading School Classics Department has gone through a massive clearout of old text books (Cambridge CLC 1+2, amongst a variety of older text books, Latin set texts, primers and grammar books, dictionaries) which might be of interest to any teacher/person willing to come to Reading School to pick them out before Thursday 20th July 2006. After this they are destined for charity shops or possibly the bin. CLC text books are mostly in good condition, as the reason they are being disposed of is that we are changing text book.

I dont know whether you put up notices on your website re such things, but perhaps you could forward this to any interested parties because it would be an absolute shame for hundreds of books to have such a sad end.

If anyone is interested in coming, they need to email either

LACTORs

LACTORs are a series of translations of source material for the study of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation. They were initially published under the aegis of the London Association of Classical Teachers (L.A.C.T.), starting in 1968, but are now published by the LACTOR Committee, an independent, non-profit-making body.
LACTORs bring before the student, who may have no knowledge of Classical Greek or Latin, a wide range of Greek and Roman literary texts, documents, inscriptions and coins. These illuminate the history and civilisation of Greece betwee 478 and 323 B.C., and of Rome between 133B.C. and A.D. 117 (or, in the case of Roman Britain, down to A.D. 410).

Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies

The Society’s Schools Committee makes grants to schools to help promote the teaching Latin and Roman studies. Most of the grants are awarded for the purchase of text books and other books on Roman topics, but the Committee also makes awards to groups and schools organising lectures or study days on Roman themes. Applications from schools planning to start courses in Latin are particularly welcome.
The annual budget is c. £6000, and the usual level of award is £50 to £500. The Committee meets three times a year. Applications should arrive by 1 February, 1 July or 1 November in any year. There is no special application form, but applicants should provide information about the level of their departmental budget, the type of course taught, and in the case of applications for books, a list of the books wanted with their prices.

The Hellenic Society Schools Sub-Committee makes grants to schools to assist projects concerned with the teaching of Greek or Greek Civilisation. In recent years the Committee has been able to be particularly munificent in its awarding of grants, thanks to the great generosity of the Leventis Foundation. Typically, grants are for books and other teaching materials, setting up Classical Societies, Classics days or conferences and Summer Schools. Applications on behalf of individual pupils or teachers are not normally considered. Applications from schools planning to start courses in Greek are especially welcome. The Committee regrets that it is unable to make awards to cover travelling expenses for school trips. Most grants are in the region of £50 to £350, but larger awards are occasionally made. The Committee meets through the year.

The Classical Association
Contact: Clare Roberts, the Classical Association, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU

The Classical Association (CA) will consider applications for: subventions to summer schools and institutions offering extra-mural courses in Greek, Latin and Classical Civilisation; bursaries for teachers attending courses abroad, notably the British School at Athens Easter Course; support of Greek and Latin reading competitions arranged by CA branches; support of regional Greek or Roman days or of school conferences; subventions to academic conferences, particularly when of broad appeal and held in major centres, with a view especially to assisting students, teachers and East European scholars to attend. The CA runs its own bursary scheme for students (undergraduate, graduate, PGCE) and teachers attending the annual CA Conference held in April each year: details are published three or four months in advance.
